돈을 떼먹다, 돈으로 누군가를 속이는 것 

stiff는 보통 형용사로 굳은, 딱딱한 의 의미로 쓰이는데 동사로 쓰일 경우 돈으로 누군가를 속이거나, 빚진 돈을 주지 않는다는 의미로 쓰일 수 있습니다. 

 

I figured someone might try to stiff us this summer. but I never thought it would be our very first customer. 

나는 이번 여름에 누군가에게 돈을 떼일수도 있을 거라 생각은 했지만, 그게 우리의 가장 첫 고객일 줄은 생각도 못했다. 

 

I feel so bad because a customer stiffed me in the shop today. 

오늘 가게에서 손님이 돈을 떼먹어서 너무 기분이 안좋아.

poke는 찌르다는 의미, around는 돌아다니다 라는 의미를 가지기 때문에 '무언가를 찾으러 돌아다닌다'는 의미를 지닙니다. 

That's when me and Rowley realized neither one of us had ever actually operated a lawn mower before. So the two of us poked around for a while and tried to figure out how to get the thing started.
